Sights

Eger is one of the most beautiful historical towns in Hungary. The baroque atmosphere and lots of monuments make it attractive for visitors. Artifacts found at excavations show different period of history from prehistoric age.

Town under the town
Did you know that a 142 km long cellar system lies underneath the town of Eger? If You happen to take a walk on Széchenyi street do not miss the chance to walk across Érsek yard and enter this amazing hidden world.

Basilika
Eger's huge cathedral is the third largest church in Hungary and also the only classicist building in this baroque town. It was built for five years from 1831.


Líceum
Opposite the Basilika is the building of Líceum that houses the main building of Eszterházy Károly College. Two constant exhibitions can be visited in this building: the archdiocese library with more than 140 000 volumes of books, with a fresco depicting the Council of Trident on its ceiling, and the observatory museum where astronomical devices are displayed. From the tower You can enjoy a beatiful view of the town.




Archpishopric collection
This unique collection presents the history of Eger's bishops and archpishops through the exhibition of church treasures and artifacts such as chalices, cloaks or chasubles.

Telekessy Pharmacy Museum
In the former building of the present museum an old pharmacy donated by István Telekessy was founded and run by jesuits. The pharmacy had been running until 1968 then it was used as a storehouse and reopened in 1987 with refurbished furniture. The original furniture was made of oak with baroque and rococo ornaments in 1745-46.

Vitkovics-house
This building was the home of Mihály Vitkovics, a writer of Serbian birth, who lived in one of the rooms where now his relics are exhibited. The other parts of the building houses Kepes Visual Centre.

Fire service Museum
The only museum in Hungary, which shows the history of the town's fire brigade from 1900, with period machines and vehicles as well as photographs.

Minaret
This oriental tower is Europe's northernmost Turkish monument, built around 1596 during the Turkish occupation. With a height of 40m it is one of the tallest buildings in the town. It was made from carved sandstone and inside the tower 96 narrow steps lead up to the circular balcony wherefrom a fascinating view of the castle and the town can be enjoyed.



Géza Gárdonyi Museum
Géza Gárdonyi was a famous writer. He moved to Eger from a small village, Gárdony, and worked in this small house. Egri Csillagok (Eclipse of the Crescent Moon) and other famous works of his were written here. His library with a collection of thousands of books - half of them in French and German - can also be found here. His study preserves his memories like his desk with the typewriter and several manuscripts including ones written in cipher.




István Dobó Castle Museum
This museum, with the highest attandance rate, is the home of many temporary and constant exhibitions. The constant exhibitions include the History of the Castle in Bishop's Palace, the wax figures of the characters from Egri Csillagok in the Wax Museum, and a list of the defenders during the 1552 siege along with István Dobó's gravestone in Heroes' Hall. During our walk in the castle we can visit some parts of the dungeon with the cellar system (Kazamata) under the castle. Géza Gárdonyi's tomb is located in the northeast wing of the fortress. In the picture gallery many Hungarian and foreign baroque painters' pictures are on display. The recently renovated Dobó bastion houses the exhibition titled "The weapons of the world - The world of weapons", which shows weapons from the last millenium.
During walking along the castle walls we can enjoy a breathtaking view of the town.
